Abstract

This contribution summarizes elementary information on the history of the preparation of thin carbon layers (diamond like carbon (DLC) layers). It focuses in detail on the principle of DLC deposition and its electronic structure. Basic characterization methods suitable for DLC layers are described together with a survey of mechanical properties and application potential of the layers. This work concerns also with the biocompatibility assessment of these layers. The final section summarizes results of authors' own experimental studies in this field. It was shown that owing to their unique physicochemical properties, DLC layers offer wide range of application in various areas of human activity, ranging from mechanics to tissue engineering.
