Abstract

This review is focused on development of simultaneous determination of non-structural saccharides and starch in leaves of higher plants. The method is based on spectrophotometric analysis of the condensation product obtained by heating saccharides or starch with anthrone in acid solution. The determination was calibrated using D-fructose and D-glucose (R2 = 0.999 and 0.998). The method was used for the determinations in leaves of European beech and in needles of Norwegian spruce cultivated under ambient conditions at elevated CO2 concentrations. The found contents were comparable with the literature values.
