Abstract

Glycans and other saccharides attached to proteins and lipids, are involved in numerous physiological or pathological processes. The changes in glycosylation are usually associated with some pathological states (such as cancer), therefore these alterations are useful tools in diagnostics. This review gives basic insight into glycomics, describes the role of glycans in biological processes and provides the information about innovative techniques in glycan analysis.
