Abstract

This paper defines and specifies the groups of natural gemstones. It deals with gemstone classification with emphasis on the chemical mineralogical system of crystals. Gemstone processing is discussed – tumble polishing, facet and flat-surface grinding and polishing, engraving and cutting, plastic grinding, and others. Some examples of natural gemstones used in architecture and art are given. Problems of natural gemstone appraisal are briefly mentioned.
