Abstract

In 1869, 150 years ago, D. I. Mendeleev published a fundamental paper on the periodic behavior of chemical elements. This paper crowned a half-century of attempts to create a logical arrangement of the elements according to their atomic weights. The paths which gradually led to completion of these attempts, attitude of contemporary chemists towards Mendeleev's system, as well as reasons for its general acceptance are briefly described.
