Abstract

Persistent organic pollutants are highly stable and toxic substances with ability of bioaccumulation. The occurrence of persistent organic pollutants in the environment is still an on-going issue despite the wide range of various technologies available to remove such compounds. This review article summarizes the main thermal and reduction technologies, including the technology of biodegradation, designed for removal of these pollutants, and highlights their main advantages and disadvantages, as well as complications associated with their application.
