Preparation of Benzonitrile by Dehydration of Benzamide with Phosphorus Pentoxide in Microwave Medium

Abstract

Dehydration of benzamide to benzonitrile with phosphorus pentoxide in a microwave reactor for 1 2.5 min gave high yields (90 %) of benzonitrile. Microwave heating led to a significant acceleration of the reaction compared with classic heating.
