Abstract

Aluminum reacts with excess anhydrous propan-2-ol at the boil in the presence of a catalyst. The toxic mercury(II) chloride catalyst can be replaced by anhydrous aluminum trichloride. The yields of the reaction are somewhat lower but the catalyst is hazardless.
