Alternative Methods for Separation of Liquid Biofuels from the Medium during Fermentation

Although distillation is a predominant technique used for separation of liquid biofuels (bioethanol and biobutanol), other methods, which can be integrated in fermentation can be exploited as an alternative. Application of these processes (gas stripping, pervaporation, adsorption, liquid extraction, pertraction and reverse osmosis) together with their main features and advantages are discussed. By exploitation of these methods lower energy demand and enhanced productivity of fermentation can be achieved and some problems such as product toxicity in acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation are eliminated.
